Are hidden photos saved to iCloud?
Yes. If iCloud Photos is on, hidden photos sync like every other photo. They show up in the Hidden album on every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in to your Apple Account, and at iCloud.com. Hiding a photo moves it out of your library view. It doesn't keep it on one device.
What hiding does, and doesn't do
- Removes the photo from Library, Memories, Featured Photos and widgets.
- Moves it to the Hidden album, which needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open.
- Keeps it in iCloud Photos, so it syncs to every device on the same Apple Account.
- Doesn't give it a separate password. The phone's passcode opens it.
Who can see it
Anyone signed in to your Apple Account on another device, anyone who knows your phone passcode, and you at iCloud.com. If you share an Apple Account with family, that includes the family iPad.
How to keep a photo off iCloud
- Move it into an app that stores photos on the phone only, with its own passcode. Mavaul encrypts each photo with AES-256 on the iPhone and has no cloud of its own.
- Delete it from Photos, then from Recently Deleted. Otherwise iCloud keeps it there for about 30 days.
- If you want a backup, use one that's encrypted before it leaves the phone. Mavaul's backup goes to your own Dropbox, Nextcloud or Files, already encrypted.
Questions
Do hidden photos show on iCloud.com?
Yes. With iCloud Photos on, the Hidden album is there too.
Does turning off Show Hidden Album stop it syncing?
No. That setting, in Settings → Photos (Settings → Apps → Photos on iOS 18 and later), only hides the album from the Photos sidebar. The photos still sync.
Are hidden photos in my iPhone backup?
If iCloud Photos is on, your photos live in iCloud Photos rather than the device backup, but either way they're stored by Apple. A vault app keeps its own encrypted files.
