# Moving my vault to a new iPhone

_By [Diogo Ferreira](/about/), founder & engineer_

A vault that keeps photos only on the phone needs a way to move them. In Mavaul you back up the vault, already encrypted, to your own Dropbox, Nextcloud or Files, then restore it on the new iPhone with your recovery key.

## On the old iPhone
1. Open Settings → Backups and choose a destination. Encrypted backup is Premium.
2. Run the backup.
3. Make sure you have your 24-character recovery key. You'll need it.

## On the new iPhone
1. Install Mavaul and choose Restore.
2. Pick the backup and type your recovery key.
3. Set a passcode for the new phone.

## Then
Check the photos are there, then erase the old phone with Erase All Content and Settings. Restore needs an empty vault on the new phone, so do it before adding photos.

## Questions
### Does a normal iPhone transfer move Mavaul's photos?
Use Mavaul's own backup and restore, with your recovery key. It's the reliable way.

### Do I pay for Premium again on the new phone?
No. Restore Purchases with the same Apple ID.
